In this blog post, we will explore the history, vision, values, and services of Oyate Health Center, and how it is making a difference in the lives of its patients and the community.

History of Oyate Health Center

Oyate Health Center was established in July 2019 as a result of a historic agreement between the Great Plains Tribal Leaders’ Health Board and the Indian Health Service (IHS). The agreement allowed the transfer of management and operation of the Sioux San Rapid City Service Unit from IHS to the Great Plains Tribal Leaders’ Health Board. The Sioux San Rapid City Service Unit was a federal facility that provided healthcare services to Native Americans in Rapid City and surrounding areas since 1898. However, the facility was plagued by chronic underfunding, understaffing, and poor quality of care. The agreement gave the Great Plains Tribal Leaders’ Health Board the opportunity to revitalize and transform the facility into a tribally-owned and operated primary care clinic that would better serve the needs and wants of the local Native American community.

Oyate Health Center was named after the Lakota word for “people” or “nation”, reflecting its mission to serve all Native Americans regardless of their tribal affiliation or residency status. Oyate Health Center also adopted a new logo that represents its vision and values. The logo features four colors that symbolize the four directions, four seasons, four stages of life, and four races of humanity. The logo also features a medicine wheel that symbolizes balance, harmony, healing, and wholeness. The logo also features an eagle feather that symbolizes strength, courage, wisdom, and spirituality.
