History of Newman Regional Health

Newman Regional Health was founded in 1922 by Dr. John W. Newman, a local physician who wanted to provide quality healthcare to the people of Emporia and surrounding areas. He donated his land and building to establish the first hospital in the area, which was named Newman Memorial County Hospital.

Over the years, Newman Regional Health has grown and expanded its facilities and services to meet the changing needs of the community. In 1978, it became one of the first hospitals in Kansas to be designated as a Critical Access Hospital (CAH), which allows it to receive enhanced reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid for providing essential services to rural areas.

In 2010, Newman Regional Health became one of the first hospitals in Kansas to be designated as a Teaching Health Center (THC), which allows it to receive federal funding for training primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals in underserved areas.

Today, Newman Regional Health operates a 25-bed acute care hospital, a 10-bed clinical decision unit, a 19-bed emergency department, a level IV trauma center, an express care clinic, a medical plaza, and several outreach clinics across Lyon County and surrounding areas.
